The fourth quarter crime statistic. The stats reflect crimes that transpired from January 1st to the end of March
The South African Police Services (SAPS) released the fourth quarter crime statistics on Friday, 14 May. The stats reflect crimes that transpired from January 1st to the end of March.

During his address, Minister Bheki Cele mentioned that almost 5 000 people were killed in three months and this shows an increase in murder rate by 8.4%. He revealed that amongst the 5000 people who were murdered, 24 of them were police officers.

Cele further explained that the Mpumalanga province, Limpopo, Free State and Northern Cape recorded a decrease in murder cases. He also voiced out his concerns about the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal provinces which both recorded double digit increases, standing at 21.5% and 16.9% respectively.
